《最遊記》的創意來源於中國古代四大名著之一的《西遊記》，除了登場人物的名字與《西遊記》相同外，故事內容及人物設定等與《西遊記》完全不同。 玄奘三藏與孫悟空、豬八戒、沙悟淨並不是師徒關係。這四人一般被稱為「三藏一行」。 《最遊記》講述的是第三十一代唐亞玄奘三藏法師接到觀世音菩薩的命令，與孫悟空、豬八戒、沙悟淨一起前往西域·天竺調查牛魔王復活實驗的故事。
