東和馬是個一位擁有「太陽之手」、立志做出專屬於日本的麵包而奮鬥的熱血少年。他在年少時被他姐姐帶到St. Pierre（桑比耶魯，或譯作聖皮耶爾）麵包店，他繼從麵包店的主人口中得知「創出對日本人來說比『飯』更好吃的『日本麵包（Japan）』」的夢想（「pan」是個諧音，取自葡文的外來語，意為「麵包」；「Japan」故意把「pan」結合在詞裡面，取「日式麵包」的音意雙重含意）。於是他利用比一般人更溫暖的雙手「太陽之手」以及異於一般常識的奇想立下「既然如此，我就做出日本麵包給大家瞧瞧」的志願製作屬於日本的麵包。 和馬在中學畢業後去報名參加「Pantasia」（潘塔吉亞）東京總店的徵才測驗。在最後選拔的參加者不只和馬，也包括河內恭介、梓川月乃(Pantasia集團的千金兼此大總裁梓川貞尚的次孫女)和諏訪原戒等許多高手。不過參加徵才考試的月乃為了發掘有力的新人所以辭退最後選拔。另一方面，河內因誇大的境遇話招致和馬的同情，在最後選拔的課題「可頌麵包」中向和馬刺探出「324層可頌麵包」的秘技；不過和馬把河內的話當真辭退最後選拔；河內被和馬善心所打動也辭退最後選拔。最後月乃邀請和馬和河內在她擔任代理店長的Pantasia南東京分店工作就職（南東京支店的店長的松代健也測試他們的能力）。
