故事背景為日本的江戶時代，風是一家小茶館的侍女，這天茶館裡來了一群地方惡霸，其中地方官兒子龍次郎尤其欺人太甚。風因為意外得罪了龍次郎，情急之下，茶館內一名無職浪人「無幻」出手救了風。另一方面，地方官正在欺壓老百姓，流浪武士「仁」路見不平拔劍相助，殺死了地方官身邊的四個「高手」保鏢，救下了窮人，因此得罪了地方官。 隨後，無幻和仁在茶館裡相遇並交手，忽然一場大火將他們困住，二人隨之被捕。因兒子在大火中喪生，惱羞成怒的地方官勒令將二人砍首。砍首之日二人大鬧刑場，並且在風的幫助下，從刑場中逃出來了。作為代價，風要求他們一起去尋找一個身上「帶著向日葵香味」的武士。從此，三人展開了一場奇幻的旅程。
