浦島景太郎為了要履行約定而多次報考東京大學，故事便是依著他的經歷一路發展下去。在第三次報考失敗和第四次考試誤以為失敗的時候，景太郎均有放棄報考東京大學之念頭，然而最後他還是決定要繼續追尋東大。雖然在景太郎以為第四次報考也是失敗的時候，萌生了對考古的興趣，有意以發掘古物來代替報考東京大學，但是後來景太郎得知考試成功，發掘古物的志向還是被「在東京大學讀書」的想法暫時取代。
